    NPR STREAMING SMART FLESH

    Hello readers and listeners,

One week to go! February 22nd, Smart Flesh will be released...

We have hand-stamped, signed, folded, stuffed, taped, S.W.A.K.ed and tethered to the feet of doves the first edition pre-orders from our apartment in Providence - and these missives sailing away from us as we type! Whomever finds the Silver Ticket, speak up! You are the big winner of a private tour of the Pasta Sauce Factory where we recorded...no joke.

That said, you don't have to wait. NPR is streaming the record in its entirety until release day in their "First Listen" section. That's at npr.org/music. It's all there. Making this record was such a surreal and unbound moment for us. We are extremely grateful to our ferociously genuine record labels Nonesuch and Bella Union for trusting us to self-produce in such unorthodox circumstance. For believing in our music.

Thanks ever to you and your smart smart flesh. We hope you enjoy it!

    Love,
    ~Jeff and The Low Anthem

    REAGAN CENTENNIAL

Dear Ronald Reagan, President, protector, lover of freedom, poet of justice,
We were too young to know thee but swooned before your likeness in the glow of the silver screen. Thank you for telling all of us degenerates to get off our asses. This song goes out to you in loving memory.
    - The Low Anthem

OPENERS ANNOUNCED - SMART FLESH TOURS

    Dear friends,

A great band called Bobby will be opening for us on the US album release tour. They sound like high and lonesome wolves on the windswept prairie awash in the icy glow of a digital moon, or something like that...and you can hear their music here.

In Canada our friends the Barr Brothers will be supporting us. These Providencers (former members of The Slip) have been friends and inspirators to our band since the start. You can hear their beautiful new album here.

Also joining us in the US will be our original band member and writer of "This God Damn House" Dan Lefkowitz. Since absconding to his Arkansas yurt three years hence, music has reinfected him driving him from his goddamn yurt and into our ragged studio where Jeff and I helped record eleven of his songs to be released later in the year.

This will be outrageous. See you soon all. What cheer!

    -Ben

    December 3rd, 2011
GHOST WOMAN BLUES - FREE DOWNLOAD

And a second bit of news today:

It feels funny to release a song out of the context of the full record, but in the interest of building a reservoir of good-will (and legitimate email addresses) we have decided to offer a free preview download of "Ghost Woman Blues," the lead track on Smart Flesh. This unflanked recording was done around only a few microphones in the frigid cold of the Pasta Sauce Factory. We hope you like it. Without further ado, a little piece of Smart Flesh.

(*if we already have your email, we won't newsletter you twice!)

Please help us out and spread the word by sharing the link on various networking sites. Or on your weblog. Or however your touch the digital hearts of you peers. We will be very very grateful!

Thanks everyone! Much more coming soon. LA

    BLACK FRIDAY SALE

Black Friday is upon us. Why get caught in a Walmart stampede when The Low Anthem webstore is offering unspeakable discounts. We have too much stuff. We are swimming in it. Stuff in the apartment, stuff in the van. Can't fit it? Stuff it in the closet. Stuff all around. Stuff enough that it's eating us out of house and home. Stuff enough that it's eating the moths that ate my vintage suit that the guy in Okemah said once belonged to Doc Holliday. Stuff rough enough to huff, puff and call your bluff. Tough, off the cuff stuff. Stuff, I address thee. "Go away now."  People, I address thee.  "Dress thee in sed addressed stuff, and go happily into your merry season."

We want our apartment back. Goodbye and happy shopping.  Most things are discounted.  Orders over blah blah blah will receive a sensual massage and a letter of recommendation to the college of your choosing.

    love, bkm

    SMART FLESH

    Smart Flesh

    Dear friends,

We are finally releasing a new record. It's been two years of reckless dream-chasing. We've scrapped and clawed that our small song not be destroyed in the machinery and noise of capitalism. At times mired in ugliness, but fumbling sometimes backwards into undreamt beauty. To you that have supported us all the way, we cannot thank you enough. You are fierce-hearted, underdogs and heroes to us.

"Smart Flesh" will be released on February 22nd, 2011. The story of the record will unfold in time. It was a wild ride. "Smart Flesh" is for you!!!!

    See you soon,
    The Low Anthem

THE WILTERN with IRON and WINE!

    hey everyone!

Hello from the tour van on our way to Harrisburg before our first stop on the Emmylou Harris tour tomorrow in Pittsburgh! We're excited to announce today that we will be playing with Iron & Wine in Los Angeles at The Wiltern on January 26th. We had the chance to play with them in the UK on our last tour and they used the pump organ on a few songs. Sam Beam joked on stage, "now we're going to use low anthem's pump organ. Show 'em how to use it right!" he's a funny guy and writes great songs.

Come see us together at the wiltern! Tickets go on sale on Friday, Nov 12th.

    Love from somewhere, USA. ~jeff

    THANK YOU, NEW RECORD

    Dear UK, Europe.

Thanks for about the funnest tour that a band can have. We're sorry we puked in three Scottish cities. We're sorry that our pet bark beetle escaped in northern germany. (If anyone finds him his name is Silky the Invasive Bark Beetle and he likes warm milk, cajun music and conifers.) Sorry about the no eye contact thing, Scandinavia. You're too beautiful. Belfast, we are just so so sorry. And England, we didn't know that burning money on stage was treason. We swear it wasn't your money. It wasn't your queen. Bless you all. We'll make right next time. Thanks for some of the best shows yet.

Dear USA. It's nice to be home to the familiar scent of diesel and coffee that doesn't taste like dessert. We'll be camped out in our studio in Providence these next weeks for the final session towards our new record. We really couldn't be more excited about it. And then we'll see you up and down the East on tour with Emmylou!  We've missed you.

Europe tour pictures as documented by our intrepid TM, Matt Ruddy, are here.

See you down the winding path.

    peace,

    LA

    Dear friends,
We're in Grongingen, The Netherlands for show number thirteen of our European roust. We wish you could be here. It's been cheap wine and fair skies. LUPO'S SHOW WILL BE FREE with DONATIONS TO BENEFIT RI FLOOD RECOVERY

Our tour was way out west when we heard about the flooding. It was a dry but helpless feeling to be so far away. Mat's mother's had the idea I think to turn Lupo's into a benefit show. A good idea! People can donate if they like or just come into Lupo's for free, which is pretty unusual. We are excited to come back home for the show, and also hopeful for the dryness of the gear in our basement.

    -Ben Knox Miller

Fellow Providence bands Tallahassee and The 'Mericans will join the band when they return home to play Lupo's next Wednesday, April 21st. The price of admission for the night will now simply be "donate what you wish," with proceeds going to the United Way's Rhode Island Flood Recovery Fund. If you have already purchased tickets and would like to be refunded, they will be refunded at point of purchse. You can also waive your refund and the money will go straight to the fund.

Please come out for a night of Providence music to benefit a Rhode Island cause.

    HEALTHCARE

Paste is featuring musician's responses to the healthcare bill here. Ben wrote the following:

"I've been following this debate with unhealthy obsession. It's a common-sense bill that protects basic human dignities. I am incensed with the scared republican obstructionists that have been fomenting idiocy rather than participating in building this landmark legislation. Shame on the media for lending credibility to their pathetic antics. Thankfully, they are on the wrong side of history. Kudos to Obama and Pelosi for sticking their necks out."

    RIP WOXY

Today is Sunday and if you just tuned in to catch Trala-Lala you probably found out the bad news. WOXY, host and friend to the band and Trala, has been discontinued owing to the bankruptcy of their parent company. It's a damn shame as they were doing quite well and listenership had been on the rise. They were one of just a handful of powerful independent voices that had survived radio's general demise, but for the foreseeable future, they are off the air. We'll let you know if they find a new home. Trala-Lala is also without a home now, but we will be back certainly. Wait for news on that. It's a shame.

    THE PROVIDENCE PHOENIX

Check out this week's Providence Phoenix for Chris Conti's great story on the making of the new record in The Pasta Sauce Factory. Headlining show back in Providence at LUPO's on April 21st!!

    February 25th, 2010
    THE TOUR HAS LAUNCHED

    How's it going y'all?

Things are good here. We've a few days to catch our breath and finish tracking at the Pasta Sauce Factory. It's sad to pack it up, but nothing's permanent, right? But we should have a great record and some ridiculous videos to remember it by. We're making plans to get it mixed at the moment.

    BUT NOW...

Our first ever national headline tour kicked off on Tuesday in the most logical place, Pittsburgh. We also did our first of ten shows opening for The Avett Brothers last night in Ohio - these shows are going to be really fun.  But THEN we do our first lap of the US and Canada as a headliner, which is pretty exciting. It's been a long time and a lot of work but we're glad it's finally here. We'll also be touring with some great bands: Lissie and Annie and the Beekeepers on the east coat, Timbre Timbre and The Barr Brothers in the west, and Nathaniel Rateliff in the middle west and Timber TImbre back in the northeast.

    AND OF COURSE...

We're excited to continue our Tra-La La-La Radio Hour on WOXY.com with special guests performing for us every week in the tour van or wherever else we happen to be recording. The theme for every upcoming week's show will be posted on twitter and facebook every Thursday previous. Feel free to suggest any songs that you think would fit the theme! Participate!

    WHICH LEADS ME TO THIS....

If anyone wants to help out by postering and getting the word out in your city, this being our our first ever headlining tour in the US and Canada, we could use your help. If you'd like to, please email street@lowanthem.com and a fairy godmother will visit you at night and give you her blessings.

    THAT'S ALL FOLKS!

    See you at the shows.

    Love as always,

    Jeff, Ben, Jocie, Mat

    UNCUT

    A note from Ben:

Linked here you'll find an amazing feature on the band just published in Uncut Magazine. The story Jaan Uhelszki put together rings with some of the highest artistic praise we could ever dream of, including bits from her conversation with Bruce Springsteen. However, in its mixed fixation on me, Chairman Miller, the article doesn't properly credit the sweat and tears, and the irreplaceable vision and direction of my friends Jeff and Jocie. We toiled in that darkness and confusion together - three of us madly focused. Without those two, OMG,CD could never have been conceived in a million years. That's how we work. That's our ethics. The article gets carried away with me and clouds or ignores their amazing contributions to what we are attempting. Nonetheless, it's an amazing article and an interesting portrait. My head spins to think that this little record was just an unknown home-recording 16 months ago.

    -Ben Knox Miller

    EUROPEAN TOUR STARTS TONIGHT

    Ladies and gentlemen,

Today we begin our final tour of the UK and Europe for quite a while. As the tour begins we find ourselves in a moment of transition - transition between OMG,CD which has become quite familiar, and a vast amount of newly recorded material that remains open and illusive to us live. Transition also between our familiar trio sound to quartet arrangements with our new fourth. He is a talented multi-instrumentalist, and we're searching for new sounds to bring the songs to their fullest. The tour also brings the exciting challenge of the largest rooms we have ever headlined. It will be a trip of surprises for us and for you. It will be our fifth and final trip to the UK and Europe behind our release OMG,CD. It's been a wild year and great joy to play for you. Come join us one last time for new sounds, and old sounds - for these bittersweet euphoric ramblings. Tickets to a lot of the shows are still available. See here.

    See you soon.

    love,
    B, J, J, M, the LA

WOXY: TRALA-LALA RADIO HOUR TO PREMIERE JANUARY 31ST

Long before Low Anthem, Jeff and I used to DJ the graveyard shift on WBRU (Providence, RI). So, starting on January 31, we're going to be doing a weekly program on WOXY.com. It'll be fun to revisit. We're calling it Trala-Lala Radio Hour and here's the idea: we're going to tape our shows from the tour van or wherever we may be traveling. Every week will feature a different theme based on God knows what and we'll have "in studio" performances from guest artists if we can find any musicians who are cool enough to record live in a Ford Econoline... The show will premiere on January 31st and air every Sunday morning 10AM EST/9AM CST and again every Monday evening at 8PM EST/7PM CST on WOXY.com.

We promised updates on our recording process and here's the first one! We are on our way to making it a home for beautiful music. more to come....

FROM BEN: PASTA SAUCE, GRATITUDE AND WINTER MIRTH

    Hi Friends, this is Ben.

I've just landed back in Providence after our last show of 2009. After 16 months of touring, it is damn fine to be home where the Gansett Lager flows like nectar, and the music rattles my brain. It's been a wild year and we can't thank you enough for being a part of it. You have appeared in dirty dives and ancient churches alike across the land for the divining of spirits and the surrection of tried magic. It's been great fun. Frankly we're dumbfuddled over some of the moments we've shared with you. And of course there've been some graceless moments as well. Por exemplo, here we are at Austin City Limits in the bottom of a murky abyss of fatigue and cynicism:

Yes, so anyhow. Though we're very proud of "Oh My God...," we do confess that after a two-years rolling release we've had some of the Darwin beaten out of us. We're wired to move on. And there's a plan for that. We'll keep you abreast of its unfolding, but it all begins today when we take a tour of a derelict and abandoned pasta sauce factory in Central Falls that may play home to our new recording project. Yep, there is a new record coming. We have been itching to make it for a years now, but with touring, needy reptiles and Jeff's single A baseball schedule, it hasn't been easy. But now we're home for the cold months and we couldn't be more excited to get to it. We'll be updating y'all regularly on the website and such.

And right, another thing I should mention. Starting a few weeks ago, we've taken a new friend into the project. We know, we know. We said we'd always stay true to our post-dirge-metal power-trio vision. And yes, it's true, the triangle is the most stable energy stucture, but you must see this little man sing and dance before you start burning your flags. He's an old friend by the name Mat Davidson, and he plays everything from accordian to musical saw to anything that can be plucked, strucked, tickled, flossed, blown or belowed. So before you start firing off hatemail to his home address (28 Cherry Pike / Roanoke, VA 24001) give the new guy a chance. He's pictured here:

And oh yes, one more thing. Starting in January, we're going to be doing a weekly radio hour on a station called WOXY based out of Austin, TX. Long before Low Anthem, Jeff and I used to DJ the graveyard shift on WBRU. It'll be fun to revisit. We're still open to zippy suggestions but as of now we're calling it Trala-Lala Radio Hour and here's the idea. We're going to tape our shows from the tour van or wherever we may be traveling. Every week will feature a different theme based on God knows what and we'll have "in studio" performances from guest artists if we can find any musicians who are cool enough to record live in a Ford Econoline. Anyhow, more news on that soon to come...

We wish you all a mirthful winter and new year. We'll be sending word from the pasta sauce factory. We love you all very much, Ben Knox Miller
